Deception Bay is a fast-developing suburb in the new local government area of Moreton Bay. It lies north of the Brisbane central business district, some 32 kilometres away from the CBD. The suburb got its name from the bay next to it, as bestowed by English explorer John Oxley in 1823. Oxley thought the bay was a river, and hence named it after its “deceiving” characteristics.

Deception Bay has a diverse community of residents; majority of its inhabitants are Australian, while the rest have migrated from New Zealand, England, the Philippines, Samoa and Scotland. This explains the variety of influences that shine through its arts, food and culture scene.

Points of interest

As part of Moreton Bay, Deception Bay is in close proximity of the oceanfront, lakes and mountain trails, which means that it never runs out of things to do for tourists and residents. The Freshwater National Park in Redcliffe is just a stone’s throw away, and so are the nature and cultural attractions in the neighbouring suburb of Caboolture.

The suburb itself has its own recreational areas: it has a dog beach, a pool, a driving range and several parks. It is also a 15-minute drive away from North Lakes, a bustling suburb teeming with shops and commercial establishments. New developments are being built that will be the setting of a new hospital, residential estates and retail centres.
